Call for Paper: Black Sailors for “American Revolution: War on the Waters”

Jake Ruddiman

We seek an author who can contribute a 6,000 word essay (based on original
research or a historiographical essay), on black sailors – free or enslaved – who
served on American or British privateers, in the Continental Navy, or in the Royal
Navy. While the primary focus of the essay needs to be naval, it may be broadened to
include the black experience in the maritime domain.

The Editorial Board at the University of Virginia Press has approved the publication of
“The American Revolution: The War on the Waters.”  These edited papers were presented at the 2024 Sons of the American Revolution Annual Conference on the American Revolution.  But the Board would ideally like one more paper to be included in the collection.

The SAR will provide a $500 honorarium to the author of the accepted paper.

Please send a short abstract and one-page CV to C.C. Felker at ccfelker@msn.com.

Submissions need to be received by June 30, 2026,  and a decision about which paper will be accepted will be made by July 15, 2026.
