The international conference Montesquieu, A Philosopher for the Early American Republic?, co-organized by CNRS and the University of Chicago, took place from June 15-17, 2022, at the Maison de la Recherche in Paris. The conference featured distinguished scholars such as Jack Rakove, Paul Cheney, Sharon Krause, Adam Lebovitz, Michael Zuckert, Odile Tourneux, Paul O. Carrese, Jacob T. Levy, Luke Foster, Nicolas Arens, Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, Iris de Rode, Jean-Baptiste Goyard, and Patrick Spero. The event explored Montesquieu’s influence on the early American republic, examining his ideas on political science, republicanism, and federalism, as well as their impact on American constitutional thought and modern political theory. The conference culminated in a roundtable discussion and a final reception at the Sorbonne.
