US launch of America 2026 at the French Embassy in Washington DC, December 15, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December, 15, 2022 the program America 2026 was officially launched in the United States. This European and transatlantic initiative aims to uncover, map, analyze networks and exchanges connecting actors, ideas, values and legacies of the American Revolution from the eighteenth century to the present day, in light of the coming 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence in 2026.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America 2026 aims to initiate conferences and initiatives to bringing the European story into the commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The attendees were US government officials, members of the French-American Cultural Foundation, the America 250 National Committee, American Friends of Lafayette, the EU delegation to the US, the Library of Congress, George Washington\u2019s Mount Vernon, and many other distinguished guests, for a total of about 60 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event started at 10am at the Maison Fran\u00e7aise of the French Embassy in Washington DC. The ambassador of France to the United States, Philippe Etienne, delivered a welcome address, noting the importance of remembering the main values of the American Revolution, and the relevance of transatlantic dialogues and initiatives such as America 2026 for today\u2019s diplomatic ties between France, Europe, and the United States. Ambassador Etienne\u2019s speech was followed by the official announcement of the launch of America 2026 by Iris de Rode, member of the America 2026 US committee. She explained the goals and purposes of America 2026, both in Europe and in the United States. In the United States, in close collaboration with the Embassy of France, CNRS Am\u00e9rique du Nord, the University of Chicago and the American Philosophical Society, as well as other partners, America 2026 aims to organize ten conferences around a large variety of European themes of the American Revolution between 2023 and 2026. This will start in Washington DC, followed by
a conference in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the first round table, \u201cHistoriographies of the American Revolution\u201d, moderated by Dr. Sophia Rosenfeld, Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, the speakers were Dr. Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, coordinator of the AMERICA 2026 initiative, professor of American History and civilization at Universit\u00e9 Paris 8, and Dr. Patrick Spero, Director of the Library & Museum of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. The discussion centered on the historiography of the American Revolution in the United States and in France, and the significance of the study of the American Revolution in today\u2019s world. The second round table, \u201cNew Perspectives on the American Revolution\u201d, was moderated by Dr. Brendan McConville, Professor of history at Boston University and director of the David Center for the Study of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. Four younger scholars presented their work. Dr. Iris de Rode, Research Fellow at George Washington\u2019s Mount Vernon (Virginia) presented her forthcoming book Military Enlightenment on the Grounds. Hugo Toudic, PhD candidate CNRS\/ University of Chicago, presented a paper \u201cMontesquieu to the rescue, the Spirit of Laws against slavery\u201d. Dr. Anna Vicenzi Assistant Professor of Modern European History at Hillsdale College (Michigan) presented her forthcoming book, \u201cThe American Revolution in Italy and the Reinvention of \u201cRevolution\u201d. Helena Yoo Roth, Ph.D. Candidate in History at the Graduate Center of University of New York City, concluded the session, presenting her PhD dissertation\u201cAmerican Timelines: Imperial Communications, Colonial Time-Consciousness, and the Coming of the American Revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
