Representations and Uses of the American Revolution in Past and Present

The Annual Conference of the Bavarian American Academy, Representations and Uses of the American Revolution in Past and Present, was held in Munich from July 7 to 9, 2022. The conference examined how the American Revolution has been interpreted and reimagined over time, with topics ranging from visual and cultural representations to historiographical and political perspectives.

The event opened with remarks by Volker Depkat (Regensburg), Karsten Fitz (Passau), and Susanne Lachenicht (Bayreuth). Highlights included Alan Taylor’s keynote on historiography, Bertrand van Ruymbeke’s analysis of French views on the Revolution, and Vanessa Vollmann’s exploration of Hamilton. The program concluded with Bertrand van Ruymbeke’s presentation of the AMERICA 2026 initiative, looking ahead to new research directions.
